ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting William Smith scored four second half goals to rally from a 2-0 halftime deficit and defeat Nazareth 4-2 in a non-conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon. Senior
Kelsey Evans made 14 saves, including 11 in the first half.
With the victory, the Herons remain undefeated with a 2-0 record. Nazareth begins the season with a 0-1 record following the loss.
Freshman
Sarah Wazenkewitz scored Nazareth's first goal of the season after receiving a pass from sophomore Kailee O'Hara. O'Hara also assisted on junior
Jordan Mitchell's goal to give the Golden Flyers a 2-0 lead 18:51 into the first half.
The Herons controlled play through much of the game, especially in the second half. About seven minutes into the second half, Emily Atwan put William Smith on the board with a goal set up by Kiersten Hamilton. Annie Kietzman tied the game with about 24 minutes remaining in the half. Atwan scored the eventual game-winning goal at the 64:13 mark. Atwan added an insurance goal with under a minute left to play after the Golden Flyers' furious rally was thwarted by the Herons' defense.
Taryn Little played the first half in goal for William Smith and was credited with one save. Chelsea Snyder played the second half and also recorded one save. Snyder earned the victory after the Herons rallied.
William Smith controlled most of the action with consistent offensive pressure. The Herons had a 28-6 advantage in shots and an 18-4 advantage in corners. In addition to Evans' strong goaltending, the Golden Flyers' defense blocked several shots to remain competitive.
