ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth got back on track in women's soccer Saturday as the Golden Flyers built a five-goal lead against Elmira before settling for a 5-2 victory over the Soaring Eagles.
Nazareth improved to 2-0 in Empire 8 Conference games and 4-4 overall. Elmira slipped to 0-2-1 in conference play and 0-6-1 overall.
Nazareth gained control early as sophomore
Sarah Eichelberger scored her first of two goals just five minutes in. Senior
Rachel Piemonte later netted her first goal of the season at teh 32-minute mark.
In the second half, Nazareth expanded its lead by scoring three times in a 10-minute stretch. Eichelberger assisted
Katie Wyant in the 52nd minute on a 15-yard blast that found the upper right corner of the goal.
Less than two minutes later, Eichelberger ascored again as she redirected a shot by
Kerry Gannon, who was credited with an assist. Eight minutes lafter that, freshman
Kaile Bushey scored her first career goal to make the score 5-0.
Elmira got on the board in the 69th minute on a goal by Caitlyn Criscuolo and again in the 86th minute on a goal by Lauren Barnett.
Nazareth had advantages in shots (29-15) and corner kicks (7-2). Senior
Hillary Simon had six saves without allowing a goal in 68 minutes of action. Freshman
Bethany Novak had two saves.
"It was nice to finally play a complete game," said Nazareth Coach
Gail Mann. "We played well and were able to get everybody in."
Nazareth resumes its Empire 8 Conference schedule Wednesday at St. John Fisher, 7 p.m.
