OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Host Oswego scored the game-winning goal with just 6.5 seconds left in the second overtime period Tuesday as the Lakers stunned Nazareth in a non-conference women's soccer match, 2-1. Oswego improved to 4-3 overall. Nazareth dropped to 3-4.
"I thought we dominated the game for the most part," said Nazareth Coach
Gail Mann. "It's a disappointing loss from that standpoint. It was a very physical game that got away from us."
Nikki Liadka scored both goals for Oswego, including the game-winner. With the clock running down in the second overtime, Stephanie San Antonio took a free kick that was played into traffic in front of net where Liadka headed a ball past Golden Flyer goalkeeper
Hillary Simon for the win.
Junior
Kerry Gannon put Nazareth on the scoreboard in the 16th minute off a penalty kick. She beat Laker goalkeeper Christina Fregosi into the bottom right side of the net. After mishandling a Golden Flyer corner by
Kelly Kuhn, Fregosi then committed a penalty in the box which ultimately led to the goal and the 1-0 lead for Nazareth at the half.
The score stayed unchanged until the 89th minute as San Antonio played a free kick that was redirected just inside the left post off the head of Liadka. Nazareth had one final scoring opportunity in regulation as
Sarah Eichelberger streaked down the left wing. Eichelberger blasted a shot that was knocked away by a charging Fregosi to send the game into overtime.
Neither team had any good scoring opportunities in overtime until the last second game-winner off the head of Liadka.
Nazareth finished with a 22-12 advantage in shots and a 10-2 edge in corner kicks. Fregosi finished with seven saves in the win for the Lakers, while Simon stopped six shots for Nazareth.
Nazareth resumes its Empire 8 Conference schedule Saturday at Elmira at 1:30 p.m..
