ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth dropped two matches on the opening day of the Golden Flyer Tournament as the Golden Flyers fell in four sets to Hiram (25-15, 25-12, 19-25, 25-21) and in five sets to New Paltz (22-25, 25-18, 25-15, 23-25, 15-12). Against New Paltz, senior
Megan Rogers tallied a match-high 31 digs and added three service aces while sophomore
Brittany Crocetti recorded a team-high 26 assists and had 11 digs.
After the Golden Flyers' two matches Friday evening, Nazareth's record fell to 2-5 overall. New Paltz and Hiram improved to 5-2 and 5-4, respectively, after the matches.
Senior
Kristi Custer led Nazareth's attack against the Hawks as she tallied a team-high 11 kills. Graduate student
Carra Vanderstyne added nine kills, 16 digs, and three service aces. Junior
Ashlee Travis also finished with three service aces while sophomore
Mindy Niebuhr contributed seven kills to the Golden Flyers' attack.
The Hawks had four players finish in double digits in kills. Melinda DiGiovanna led New Paltz's attack with a match-high 15 kills and she added 19 digs. Stephanie Skrobach and Dana Kindelmann each recorded 11 kills while Dana Vosilla finished with 10 kills. Skrobach also had a team-high 29 digs and a match-high six service aces. Marissa King tallied a match-high 38 assists.
In its match against Hiram, Nazareth received a team-high 10 kills from sophomore
Aubrey Cooke. Vanderstyne and sophomore
Amy Johnson added six kills and five kills, respectively. The Golden Flyers relied on Crocetti again as their primary setter and she finished with a match-high 31 assists. Rogers tallied a match-high 17 digs in defending the Lady Terriers' attack.
Kristi Opfer paced Hiram with 11 kills and Shaina Bryan and Ariel Pund each added nine kills. Bryan also accumulated a team-high 14 digs. Kallie Rogers tallied a team-high 19 assists while Alyssa Coundourides had 14 assists.
The Golden Flyers continue action in the tournament at Nazareth with a 10 a.m. match against Heidelburg Saturday morning.
