ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Junior midfielder
Kelly Kuhn scored twice within a five-minute stretch of the first half Wednesday to lift host Nazareth to a 3-1 women's soccer win over Buffalo State in a non-conference game at Golden Flyer Stadium. The game was the season opener for both teams.
The Golden Flyers have a challenging weekend ahead as they host the Nazareth Tournament. Nazareth hosts 16th-ranked William Smith (14-3-3 last season) Saturday at 2 p.m. and 10th-ranked Otterbein (20-2-1) Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
The Golden Flyers dominated most of the action Wednesday against the Bengals, whom they were playing for the first time since 1995. Kuhn scored Nazareth's first goal of the season in the eighth minute after she settled a rebound of a shot by
Erica Conte, who was credited with an assist.
Less than five minutes later, Kuhn added her second goal after junior
Kaylee Benz dribbled into the Buffalo State zone and touched a pass to Kuhn, who delivered a shot from about 18 yards out.
The score went unchanged until the 81st minute when freshman
Olivia Derleth finished a long pass from
Kara Eaker for the Golden Flyers' third goal.
The Bengals averted the shutout with just :25 left as Rachel Pettys fired a shot through a maze of players, including Nazareth keeper
Hillary Simon, to make it a 3-1 final.
Simon finished with four saves. Freshman Linda Banfield had six saves for Buffalo State.
