ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth College seniors
Philip Holmberg and
Polly Muehlenkamp are the 2010 recipients of the Emily Haskins Inspirational Athlete Award. The award recognizes students' athletic achievement and their inspiration to others.
Holmberg, a native of Malmö, Sweden and a graduate of Didaktus, has played three seasons of soccer for the Golden Flyers. In October of the 2009 season, Holmberg scored a goal against Elmira, contributing to Nazareth's 4-0 win over the competition. Unfortunately, Holmberg missed all of the 2008 season due to a knee injury. In 2007, he earned honorable mention Empire 8 all-conference honors as a midfielder and started in 18 games. Holmberg also earned second-team Empire 8 Conference all-star honors and started in all 23 games during the 2006 season. During his freshman year, Holmberg tallied four goals and four assists. His final goal of the 2006 season won the Empire 8 Conference championship game for Nazareth against RIT.
A native of Cincinnati, Ohio and a graduate of Wyoming High School, Muehlenkamp is a four-year member of the women's soccer team and the softball team. During the past soccer season, Muehlenkamp was named as an Empire 8 Sportswoman of the Year. During the 2009 season, Muehlenkamp earned her second career shutout over Hamilton and was credited for Nazareth's 2-1 victory over Oswego. In the 2008 season, she totalled 17 saves and recorded a shutout over Allegheny. In 2007, Muehlenkamp played in six games and tallied eight saves. She held a goals-against average of 0.98 as a rookie in 2006. During the current softball season, Muehlenkamp has scored against Cazenovia and McDaniel College and contributed a home run to Nazareth's win over Utica.
The Inspirational Athlete Award was created in honor of Emily Haskins, a former Nazareth soccer player. Haskins died unexpectedly in 2000.
