GENESEO, N.Y. -- Sophomore
Kelly Kocher reached a new strikeout level Wednesday at Geneseo as she struck out a school-record 19 batters against the Blue Knights. Unfortunately for Nazareth, it wasn't enough as the Golden Flyers dropped the first game of a non-conference softball doubleheader, 3-2, in nine innings. Geneseo also edged Nazareth in the second game, 4-3.
Nazareth is 12-16 overall, while Geneseo improved to 16-12.
Kocher leads all of Division III in strikeouts per seven innings at 13.9 entering Wednesday's games. She now has 213 strikeouts in 105 2/3 innings pitched. Against Geneseo, she pitched eight innings, allowed six hits and walked just one. Her record fell to 10-5.
Nazareth led 2-0 in the first inning on a two-run homer by
Brittany Patenaude. Geneseo scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score and force extra innings and then won the game in the bottom of the ninth on a run-scoring double by Bree Crossett.
In the second game, Nazareth managed just four hits and fell behind 2-0 in the first inning. The Golden Flyers rallied to tie the score with single runs in the second and fourth innings. In the second inning, Patenaude doubled and scored on a two-out single by
Katie Valerio. In the fourth inning, three straight Geneseo errors enabled
Kaitlin Graham to score the tying run.
Geneseo went ahead for good, 4-2, with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. KK Shaus doubled home Molly Walsh with the go-ahead run. Katie Holm then singled home Shaus with the fourth run.
Nazareth scored another run in the seventh when Valerio singled, advanced to second on an error and scored on an infield grounder by
Kelley Horbal. With the tying run at third base, Geneseo got the last out on a fly to right by
Polly Muehlenkamp.
Nazareth has an important Empire 8 Conference weekend coming up. The Golden Flyers are at St. John Fisher Saturday for two games, starting at 1 p.m. They host RIT Sunday at 1.
