Nazareth sweeps Cazenovia

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth completed a two-game sweep of Cazenovia in Wednesday's non-conference softball games. Sophomore Casey Mathers hit a two-run home run to secure the 5-1 victory in the first game, then pitched a five-hitter game to lead the Golden Flyers to a 4-1 victory in the second game. Sophomore Brittany Patenaude connected on a two-run homer in the second game to extend Nazareth's lead.

With the victories, the Golden Flyers even their overall record at 11-11. The Wildcats fall to 10-8 after dropping both games.

In game one, Nazareth took an early lead in the first inning when senior Polly Muehlenkamp scored on a passed ball. The Golden Flyers stretched their lead to two runs on an RBI single by Mathers, which scored freshman Kaitlin Graham.

In the third inning, Mathers connected on her home run, which also scored Patenaude, who had hit a one-out single. Cazenovia cut its deficit to 4-1 in the fourth inning as Christine Nichols doubled home Kierstyn DeCory. Sophomore Kelly Kocher struck out the next three Wildcats to end Cazenovia's scoring threat. Nazareth added a fifth run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by senior Ann Schoff. Mathers scored on Schoff's fly ball.

Kocher allowed just one run and two hits in her seven innings to earn the victory for the Golden Flyers. Kocher tallied a game-high 16 strikeouts. Alyssa Boswell recorded four strikeouts for Cazenovia in the loss.

In game two, Cazenovia jumped to the early lead with a run in the top of the second inning. Jessica Kneaskern scored on a single by Maureen Brosnan.

The Golden Flyers, however, claimed the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior Kelley Horbal led off with a double, then scored two batters later on a fielder's choice. After earning a two-out walk, Patenaude moved to second on a single by Mathers, then scored on a single by junior Katie Valerio.

In the sixth inning, Patenaude's two-run home run added insurance to Nazareth's lead. Graham scored on Patenaude's homer after getting on base with a one-out single.

Mathers finished with just one run allowed on five hits and struck out 12 batters to earn the victory for the Golden Flyers. Maureen Brosnan had two strikeouts for the Wildcats in the loss.

Nazareth resumes its Empire 8 schedule Saturday with a doubleheader against Utica. The Golden Flyers also host conference rival Ithaca in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon. The first game begins at 1 p.m. on both days.
