Nazareth splits two at Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. --  Host Oswego scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning Monday to salvage a softball split with Nazareth in a non-conference doubleheader. Nazareth won the first game, 3-0, behind the one-hit pitching of Kelly Kocher. Oswego won the second game, 5-4.

Nazareth's record is 9-11 overall. Oswego is 2-18.

Kocher, the Empire 8 Pitcher of the Week, extended her scoreless innings streak to 28 2/3 as she mowed down the Lakers. She carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning when Oswego's Eileen Joyce reached on a one-out single. Kocher also had 16 strikeouts.

Nazareth scored twice in the third inning. Kelley Horbal singled and advanced to second base on a ground ball and scored on a single by Kaitlin Graham. Graham moved to third following walks to Brittany Patenaude and Casey Mathers# and scored on a wild pitch.

Nazareth added another run in the fifth inning after Graham, Patenaude and Mathers strung together consecutive singles. Graham scored on an infield error.

Nazareth led 3-2 in the second game before Oswego forced extra innings with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Sue Schoff knocked in the tying run with a double.

Nazareth regained the lead with a run in the top of the ninth. With Patenaude placed on second, Alyssa Cohen sacrificed her to third and she scored on a single by Polly Muehlenkamp. Oswego won the game with two runs in the bottom of the ninth.

Graham finished with four hits in the doubleheader for Nazareth. Cohen had two hits in the second game. Nazareth is home Wednesday for a non-conference doubleeheader against Cazenovia at 3 p.m.
