HOBOKEN, N.J. -- Sophomore
Kelly Kocher turned in two more dominating pitching performances Sunday as visiting Nazareth blanked Empire 8 Conference rival Stevens in both games of a doubleheader by scores of 4-0 and 5-0.
Nazareth improved its overall record to 8-10, including a 3-3 mark in conference games. Stevens dropped to 5-17 overall and 0-6 in the Empire 8.
Kocher kept the Ducks handcuffed all afternoon as she pitched all 14 innings for the Golden Flyers. She yielded just two singles in the first game with no walks and a career-high 18 strikeouts. She allowed just four hits in the second game, while striking out eight.
Kocher won her sixth and seventh games of the season and raised her strikeout total to 134 in 69 2/3 innings.
Senior
Ann Schoff provided all of the Golden Flyers' offense in the first game with a double and a home run and all four runs batted in.
Casey Mathers opened the fourth inning with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Mandy Weakley. On out later, Schoff ripped a double down the left-field line to score Mathers.
The score remained 1-0 until the top of the sixth inning. Mathers and Weakley both reached base on Stevens fielding errors and both scored ahead of Schoff's third home run of the season, a three-run blast over the left-field fence.
In the second game, Nazareth scored in the second inning after
Brittany Patenaude reached on a walk and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by
Katie Valerio. Two more runs scored in the fourth as freshman
Haley Wagner ripped a two-run double. Nazareth scored twice more in the sixth inning, highlighted by run-scoring single by
Jessica Mangicaro and an RBI grounder by
Polly Muehlenkamp.
Nazareth is in action again Monday with a non-conference doubleheader at Oswego, starting at 3 p.m.
