Nazareth falls to Newbury and Rivier

Golden Flyers travel to Hilbert Tuesday

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth dropped matches against Newbury and Rivier Friday evening as the host Golden Flyers fall to 10-10 overall following the two losses. The scores in the Newbury match were 30-27, 30-26, 30-24, and the scores in the Rivier match were 28-30, 30-19, 30-21, 30-27. Junior Hans Schroeder finished with a team-high 17 kills against Rivier.

After defeating 15th-ranked Nazareth, Newbury improves to 15-8 overall, and sixth-ranked Rivier improves to 21-5 overall.

In the match against Rivier, the Golden Flyers also received 11 kills from junior Chris Mendez and five kills apiece from junior Ellis Walsh and freshman Robert Kraft. Senior Kevin Kirchhoff and freshman #E.J. Wells-Spicer# tallied 23 assists and 20 assists, respectively. Freshman Dan Mowery also recorded a match-high 12 digs.

Jared Andreozzi had a match-high 20 kills to lead Rivier. The Radiers also received 14 kills from Matt Ferreira and seven kills from Taylor Lindner. Zach Hansen tallied a match-high 42 assists and seven service aces. Kyle O'Neill finished with a team-high 11 digs. Lindner also had a match-high seven blocks.

Against Newbury Mendez and Schroeder each tallied 10 kills for Nazareth, but Newbury's Mark Thomas recorded a match-high 17 kills to guide the Nighthawks to the three-set victory. In addition to the kills from Mendez and Schroeder, junior Will Siwy had eight kills and Kraft added three kills.

Kirchhoff finished the match with a team-high 20 assists as the Golden Flyers' primary setter. Wells-Spicer recorded nine assists, and also finished with a team-high eight digs. Kraft had a match-high three service aces while Mowery and Mendez finished with seven digs and six digs, respectively.

Josh Aberly added 12 kills to the Nighthawks' attack while Matt Talamantes and Danny Kim each finished with six kills. Talamantes also recorded a match-high 37 assists. Mike Biuso and Aberly each tallied five digs for Newbury. The Nighthawks held Nazareth to hitting percentage of .061 to win the first set, then recorded hitting percentages of .424 and .375 in the second and third sets to sweep the match.

Nazareth will travel to Hilbert Tuesday evening for its next match.
