Medaille rally drops Nazareth in ot, 78-72

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- Nazareth's 2009-10 men's basketball season came to a crashing halt Friday in the first round of the NCAA Division III basketball tournament as Medaille rallied for a 78-72 overtime victory over the Golden Flyers at SUNY Plattsburgh.

Nazareth led by as many as 12 points in the second half before Medaille rallied to tie the game at the end of regulation and then outscored the Golden Flyers 13-7 in the extra five-minute period. The Golden Flyers' season ends at 18-10 overall. Medaille improved to 24-4 and will play Saturday against the winner of the game between Plattsburgh and SUNYIT.

Nazareth led 36-31 at halftime and extended that advantage to 12 points, 47-35, following a three-point basket by Jason Corletta with 13:37 left. Nazareth still led by 11, 60-49, after Tyshun Stephens scored with 5:32 to go.

Medaille battled back and closed within three, 62-59, on a basket by Ricky Reed with 1:55 to go. A basket by Ron Malicki made it a one-point game, 64-63, with :17 left. Nazareth's Jake Fladd made a free throw with :13 left to make it 65-63, but Medaille forced overtime on a jumper by Keith Hack as time expired to end regulation.

Hack hit a jumper for Medaille to start the overtime and the Mavericks never trailed after that. The lead grew to five, 74-69, after a free throw by Hack with :38 left. Nazareth showed life when Corey McAdam completed a three-point play with :27 left.

Nazareth didn't score again as Malicki made four free throws for Medaille in the final :21 to preserve the victory.

The loss closed the curtain on the brilliant career of McAdam, who scored 21 points and passed for 10 assists to raise his career totals to 1,865 points and 792 assists respectively. Stephens added 18 points, but fouled out with :55 left in regulation. Corletta scored 11 points and Fladd had 10.

Malicki led all scorers with 28 points and nine rebounds. Hack scored 19 and Reed 14.
