KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Sophomore
Casey Mathers tossed a four-hit shutout for her first pitching victory of the season Friday as Nazareth defeated McDaniel College of Maryland in spring break softball action, 3-0. The Golden Flyers also lost to Ramapo of New Jersey in the second game, 1-0, and return home at 4-6 overall.
Mathers had five strikeouts and walked just one batter for the win for the Golden Flyers. Senior
Ann Schoff fueled the offense with two hits in three at bats, including a two-run homer in the fourth inning. Nazareth also scored a run in the first inning following singles by
Polly Muehlenkamp and
Kaitlin Graham.
Mandy Weakley drew a walk to load the bases and Muehlenkamp scored on a sacrifice fly by
Brittany Patenaude.
Schoff's home run came in the fourth inning after #Katie Valerio opened the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mathers.
In the second game, sophomore
Kelly Kocher pitched her fifth straight strong game of the spring break trip as she allowed just four hits over seven innings and struck out 13. Through five games, Kocher has a 1.23 earned run average with a whopping 72 strikeouts in 34 innings.
Against Ramapo, though, Nazareth managed only two hits themselves -- a single by Graham in the first inning and a single by Muehlenkamp in the fourth -- and never got a runner past first base. Ramapo pitcher Deanna Giordano with 12 strikeouts and no walks.
Ramapo scored the only run in the fifth inning after a lead-off double by Jaclyn Giangrande. She advanced to third on a bunt and scored on an illegal pitch by Kocher.
Nazareth is off until March 31 when the Golden Flyers host Brockport in a doubleheader, starting at 3 p.m.
