Phil Scaffidi each scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the host Golden Flyers to a 75-60 victory over Hartwick in an Empire 8 men's basketball game. Senior
Corey McAdam tallied a team-high 20 points to surpass 1,700 career points. McAdam now has 1,706 career points as a Golden Flyer.
With the victory, Nazareth improves to 14-7 overall and 9-3 in Empire 8 games. The Hawks fall to 8-12 overall and 5-7 in conference games. The Golden Flyers are currently in second place in the E8 standings. The top four teams advance to the conference tournament, February 26-27.
After trading baskets to begin the game, Nazareth took the lead for good with just under 9:00 remaining in the first period. The Golden Flyers' lead swelled to 14 points, 37-23, with 1:04 to play in the half. Nazareth took the double-digit lead with a 19-5 scoring run that spanned almost eight minutes. Corletta started the run with a three-point basket, which was followed by two free throws by freshman
Dan Waldbillig and a layup by sophomore
Greg Lothridge. McAdam then added a layup before Corletta and freshman
Tyshun Stephens connected on back-to-back three-point baskets. McAdam and Stephens capped the run with a layup and two free throws. The Hawks finished the half with a 5-0 scoring run to cut Nazareth's lead to 37-28 at the break.
In the second half, the Hawks cut the Golden Flyers' lead to six points multiple times in the first eight minutes, but they could not come any closer. With 10:57 to play, Nazareth began a 12-4 scoring run. The run lasted 3:13 and gave the Golden Flyers' a 16 point lead, 62-48, with 8:43 remaining. Nazareth held a game-high lead of 17 points three times in the final 3:42. The first came after a three-point basket from Scaffidi, the second after a jumper by Waldbillig, and the third was following a jumper by McAdam. The Hawks' Kyle Phillips scored the final basket of the game to cut the final score to 75-60.
In addition to the points from Corletta, Scaffidi, and McAdam, Lothridge and Stephens finished with seven points, and five points, respectively. Waldbillig added four points for the Golden Flyers while McAdam recorded nine assists. Nazareth had a 42-33 advantage on the boards thanks to the rebounds by Corletta and Scaffidi.
Phillips had a game-high 28 points to lead Hartwick. Chris Ryder and Mark Blazek added 14 points and 12 points, respectively. Ryder and Martin McCann each had a team-high six rebounds for the Hawks.
Nazareth is in action again Saturday afternoon for a 4 p.m. conference game against Ithaca.
