ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth broke open a tie game Sunday in men's lacrosse by outscoring Springfield 4-0 in the second half as the Golden Flyers defeated the Pride, 11-7, at Nazareth's artificial turf field.

The game was the season opener for the 15th-ranked Golden Flyers, while Springfield dropped to 1-1 overall.

Nazareth was up 6-2 early in the second quarter before the Pride rallied with five straight goals to take a 7-6 lead. Nazareth tied the score at 7-7 on a goal by senior Mark DeCirce with :26 left in the first half and then scored three times in the third quarter and once in the fourth while keeping the Pride off the scoreboard for the final 30 minutes.

Junior midfielder Scott Castle had three goals and three assists for the Golden Flyers, while DeCirce also scored three times. Junior attackman Joe Jacobs-Ferderbar had one goal and three assists.

After Springfield's Kyle Louer opened the scoring with an unassisted goal less than three minutes into the game, Nazareth rattled off five straight goals. Castle scored the first goal and then assisted junior Adam Nauerth on the second. DeCirce netted his first goal with 7:22 left in the first quarter and sophomore #C.J. Estes# completed the first-quarter scoring off an assist from Jacobs-Ferderbar.

Nazareth made it 5-1 early in the second as Jacobs-Ferderbar scored a man-up goal off an assist from Castle. Louer's second goal of the game for Springfield interrupted Nazareth's run before sophomore midfielder John McDonnell scored unassisted for a 6-2 advantage.

Springfield then surged ahead with five straight goals. Joe Macchi scored twice and Shawn Runyon had a goal and three assists in the second quarter. Louer and Austin Orsini also scored to help the Pride go ahead 7-6.

DeCirce's second goal of the game tied the score before halftime, then Castle added two more goals to open the third quarter, the second coming on an extra-man pass from Jacobs-Ferderbar. Senior midfielder Erinn O'Hara scored with :12 left in the third quarter to make it 10-7 and DeCirce scored the final goal off an assist from Jacobs-Ferderbar early in the fourth quarter.

Nazareth had a 40-37 edge in shots while ground balls were even at 28. Nazareth's defense, featuring juniors Mitchel Frey and Brian Orr and seniors Kyle Brown and Brian O'Donnell played solidly over the final 30 minutes in front of senior goalie Todd Dermody, who made nine saves. Springfield goalie Marc Martinez had 13 saves.

Nazareth plays again Saturday against Geneseo at 1 p.m. at Monroe Community College.
