ROCHESTER, NY --
Brittany Wilson scored a three-pointer with 0.4 left in overtime Tuesday to lift Nazareth to a 68-65 win over visiting St. John Fisher in women's basketball. Wilson scored eight of her game-high 19 points in overtime to lead the Golden Flyers.
Nazareth improved to 12-12 overall and 6-9 in the Empire 8 Conference while St. John Fisher dropped to 13-10, 8-7. Nazareth led the entire first half shooting 50percent from the field and 45 percent from behind the three-point arc. They led by as many as 15 points, 26-11, with 7:40 left in the half. The Cardinals slowly chipped away and cut the lead to just three, 33-30 at the end of the half.
The Cardinals opened the second half with a 13-0 run, holding the Flyers scoreless for the first 7:44 and taking a 45-34 lead. Nazareth's
Kelly Dunne, playing in her final home game, scored her first points of the game by hitting two free throws with 12:16 left to cut the lead to 10.
The visitors held on to their lead until 2:27 left in regulation when
Kylie Bartlett scored her fourth three-pointer of the night to give Nazareth a 58-57 lead. Bartlett finished with 13 points and was 4-for-6 from behind the arc and 4-of-8 from the field. Fisher's Amanda Lax hit one of two free throws with :58 left to tie the game and send it into overtime.
Wilson opened the scoring for the Flyers with two made free throws just :04 into overtime to give Nazareth a 60-58 lead. After two more made field goals by Wilson, Nazareth took a five-point lead, 63-58, with 2:40 left. St. John Fisher tied it up with :20 left in overtime when Lax hit a three-pointer.
After a timeout, Wilson missed a jumper with :06 left, but
Rachel Pirozzolo was able to grab the offensive rebound and kick the ball out to Wilson who hit the three from the left corner judt before the buzzer sounded to give the Golden Flyers the 68-65 win. It was the 65th meeting between the two schools in women's basketball, but the first to go to overtime. The victory avenged a 61-46 loss at Fisher Jan. 26.
Jenee Vanderstyne finished with nine points, Dunne added eight and four assists. Wilson led all players with 12 rebounds. The Golden Flyers shot 50 percent from behind the arc for the game and 40 percent from the field. The Cardinals had a slight edge in rebounds 43-41.
Nazareth closes out their 2010 season at Alfred Sunday at 12 p.m.
