BROCKPORT, NY – St. John Fisher used a 16-0 run in the first half to propel the Cardinals to a 70-49 victory over Nazareth College in the fifth-place women's basketball game of the Wendy's College Classic at SUNY Brockport Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Flyers finished sixth in the tournament and now stand at 3-4 on the season. St. John Fisher improves their season record to 3-4 as well.
Nazareth jumped out to a quick 12-6 lead five minutes into the game thanks to a pair of three-pointers by senior
Mary Holland. St. John Fisher answered right back with a 16-0 run over the next four minutes to take a 10-point lead of their own, 22-12.
The Golden Flyers would narrow the lead to four on a baseline jumper by
Brittany Patenaude with just less than nine minutes left in the half. However that would be as close as Nazareth would make it in the half as Fisher extended its lead to 15 points, 40-25, into halftime.
The Cardinals lead would grow to 26 as they went on a 13-2 run to start the second half. Junior
Brittany Wilson attempted to lead the Flyers back into the game, however her 10 second-half points were not enough as St. John Fisher won 70-49.
Wilson led Nazareth with 17 points. Holland added eight and Patenaude had nine rebounds for the Golden Flyers. Wilson represented the Golden Flyers as a second-team all-tournament selection.
Colleen Maloney had a game-high 20 points for Fisher as she eclipsed 1,000 in her career. Camaryn Buckner added a double-double for the Cardinals with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Nazareth with return to action this Thursday, December 9th, as they open Empire 8 Conference play with a 5 p.m. game at Ithaca College.
