HAMBURG, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth surged to a 10-point halftime lead and never trailed thereafter on the way to a 69-54 men's basketball victory over Hilbert.
Nazareth improved to 7-2 overall with the non-conference win. Hilbert dropped to 3-6. Nazareth is off until Jan. 5 when the Golden Flyers host Cortland at 7 p.m. in the first of five straight home games.
Junior
Phil Scaffidi scored a game-high 19 points to pace the Golden Flyers, who used a 19-6 scoring run over the last nine first-half minutes to take a commanding 37-27 lead at the break. Junior
Jason Corletta added 18 points and seven rebounds and junior
Tyshun Stephens finished with 13 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Nazareth led 18-17 after a three-pointer by Corletta with 10 minutes left in the first half. Hilbert countered with two baskets by Keon Rembert to take a 21-18 lead.
Stephens then nailed a three-pointer to tie the score and Scaffidi sank a pair of free throws with 7:35 left to trigger Nazareth's scoring run as the Golden Flyers took the lead for good. Scaffidi scored seven of his points during the decisive run as Nazareth gradually pulled away.
In the second half, Hilbert closed to within eight, 39-31, after a tip-in basket by Roman Brown, but a jumper by Corletta touched off a 10-1 scoring spurt that culminated with a three-pointer by Scaffidi as Nazareth went up 49-32 with 15 minutes left.
Nazareth's lead never left double digits thereafter and grew to 20 points, 67-47, on a basket by Corletta with 2:59 to go.
Freshman
Brad Ford also reached double figures with 10 points plus seven rebounds. Junior center
Greg Lothridge added seven points and four blocked shots.
Nazareth shot 44.1 percent from the field (26 for 59), including 5 for 13 from three-point range. The Golden Flyers also enjoyed a 41-34 rebounding advantage. Brown was Hilbert's high scorer with 18 points. Dan McFarland had 12.
