HOBOKEN, NJ - Stevens Institute of Technology scored one goal in each half to defeat Nazareth 2-0 in the Empire 8 field hockey semi-finals. The Ducks advance to Sunday's Empire 8 Championship game against Washington & Jefferson.
The Golden Flyers end their season 7-10 while Stevens improves to 9-10. This was the second loss to the Ducks in as many weeks. In the regular season meeting, Stevens defeated Nazareth 2-1 and out-shot the Golden Flyers 22-5 but the Golden Flyers made them work for the win taking them to overtime and penalty strokes.
The Ducks out-shot Nazareth 21-3 and had a 19-8 advantage on penalty corners.
Both of Stevens' goals came early in each half. The first goal of the game was scored by Mary Nikish at 7:33 off of a penalty corner. She was assisted by Mallory Swanson. Karen Federico scored just under three minutes into the second half to give the Ducks' the 2-0 lead. She was assisted by Samantha Weisman.
Kailee O'Hara had two of Nazareth's three shots. Both came in the second half.
Kelsey Evans recorded eight saves in the game. Ellyn Griggs was never challenged in goal and did not earn a save. Evans finishes her career with 506 saves. She is second behind Heather Sauter who made 636 saves in her career.
