CARLISLE, Pa. -- Tournament MVP
Dan Waldbillig scored a game-high 19 points for the second day in a row Saturday to lift visiting Nazareth to a 70-66 victory over Dickinson in he championship game of the Pizza Hut Tip-Off Tournament hosted by the Red Devils.
Nazareth was able to withstand a last-minute surge by the host school as Waldbillig sank a pair of free throws with :06 left to preserve the victory. Overall, Waldbillig went 3 for 5 from the field and sank 11 of 13 foul shots. He also scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds in Friday's victory over Oneonta.
Sophomore
Tyshun Stephens added 17 points and also represented Nazareth on the all-tournament team. Junior
Jason Corletta scored 11 points and freshman
Brad Ford had 10 points and six rebounds.
"We had a lot of different guys contributing and that's a real positive sign for the first weekend of the season," said Nazareth Coach
Kevin Broderick. "Tyshun did a nice job handling their pressure and Dan did a greast for us down the stretch."
Nazareth led for most of the game, but Dickinson stayed close and used a seven-point scoring run in the final minute to close within two, 68-66, with :59 left. After Nazareth missed a chance to extend its lead, Dickinson's Pat Kearns missed an attempt to tie the game and Waldbillig secured the rebound. He was fouled and sank the two resulting free throws.
The game was tied at 57-57 with 7:26 left after Dickinson's Matt Dolan sank two free throws. Nazareth, however, scored nine straight points to take the lead for good, 66-57. Sophomore
Sean Fox started the run by hitting a three-pointer. Waldbillig then converted an old-fashioned three-point play and Ford followed with a three-pointer to complete the run.
"They started doubling us in the post and that left guys open on the perimeter," Broderick said. "Fox and Ford hit two huge shots for us."
Nazareth made 21 of 44 shots from the field and 22 of 28 free throws. Stephens added six assists in addition to his 17 points.
Nazareth is back in action Tuesday for a non-conference game at the University of Rochester at 8 p.m.
