Golden Flyers finish in 16th place

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Sophomores Kelsey Ryan and Kelsey Mash finished less than a second apart Saturday as they crossed the finish line as the Golden Flyers' top female finishers at the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional Cross Country Championships at Fortin Park in Oneonta.

Nazareth finished in 16th place among 33 teams overall wit 519 points. St. Lawrence Univesity, paced by repeat winner Wendy Pavlus, won the team title with 59 points. The Saints had three runners among the top 10 finishers.

Ryan was Nazareth's top performer as she placed 92nd on the 6,000-meter layout with a time of 24 minutes, 46.9 seconds. Mash was close behind in 94th place and a time of 24:47.6.

Other Nazareth contributors were junior Michelle Gillette in 100th place (24:52.2); freshman Katie Piechowiak in 110th place (25:12.4); and freshman Bethany Althaus in 123rd place (25:23.6).

Sophomore Lauren Jamieson and senior Samantha Hickok also competed and finished in 141st and 146th place with times of 25:51.8 and 25:57.8 respectively.

In the men's event, Nazareth finished in 31st place among 39 teams at the same location with 857 points. Geneseo, behind a first-place finish from Lee Berube, claimed the team title with 47 points.

Nazareth top finisher was senior Matt Morales, who has been the Golden Flyers' frontrunner all season. He finished in 70th place with a time of 26:41.8 for 8,000 meters.

Juniors Pete Fekete and Tim Rutan were next, crossing the finish line in 123rd and 188th place respectively. Fekete ran 27:31.6 and Rutan went 28:44.6

Other competitors for Nazareth were freshman Jake Lafaver in 233rd place (30:16.2), sophomore Josh Strough in 243rd place (30:49.4) and freshman Zach Lafaver in 244th place (30:52.1).
