ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Golden Flyers were defeated by visiting Washington & Jefferson in an Empire 8 Conference field hockey game on Saturday. The Presidents won the game 2-0. Nazareth's record fell to 3-6 overall (1-2 E8), while Washington & Jefferson's record moved to 7-2 overall (3-0 E8).
At the end of the scoreless first half, the Presidents had tallied six shots to the Golden Flyers' one shot. The Presidents also led 3-0 in corners. Nazareth's shot in the first half was made by junior midfielder
Elise Maryanopolis.
About halfway through the second half, freshman forward Alexandra Kania scored for the Presidents. Freshman Tori Patrick passed the ball left of the goal to Kania, who flicked the ball past Nazareth goalie
Kelsey Evans' right arm. It was Kania's second goal of the season.
With under four minutes left in the game, sophomore forward Jennifer Marabella scored a second goal for Washington & Jefferson. Marabella worked her way into the left of the circle to intercept a rebound off Evans' pads. She quickly took another shot for the Presidents, scoring her 11th goal of the season.
Evans made 15 saves for Nazareth, 10 of which were in the second half. Junior goalie Shelby Colyer totalled seven saves for Washington and Jefferson, with six in the second half.
Nazareth's next game will be home on Oct. 14th against St. Lawrence at 4 p.m.
