SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Sophomore
Kelsey Ryan was Nazareth's top individual finisher Sunday at the Empire 8 Conference cross country championships at Saratoga State Park. Ryan finished in 12th place on the 5-kilometer course to lead the Golden Flyers to a third-place finish in the team standings with 91 points.
Ithaca, with five of the top six finishers, was a runaway winner as conference champion with 16 points. RIT was second with 68, then Nazareth and Utica each with 91. Stevens (139), Alfred (159) and Hartwick (178) also competed.
Ryan was timed in 19:01 and was recognized as a second-team all-conference selection. She was followed to the finish line by freshman Katie Piechowiak in 18th place (19:25); junior
Michelle Gillette in 21st place (19:36); freshman
Bethany Althaus in 25th place (19:43); and sophomore
Lauren Jamieson in 33rd place (20:10). Juniors
Samantha Hickok in 36th place (20:35) and
Katie Mutter in 43rd place (21:11) rounded out Nazareth's top seven.
In the men's race, Nazareth finished fifth in the team standings with 131 points. Ithaca, with five of the top nine finishers, placed first with 21 points. RIT was second with 44, followed by Utica (85), Stevens (119) and Nazareth (131). Hartwick (167) and Alfred (196) also ran.
Senior
Matt Morales paced the Golden Flyers with a seventh-place finish on the 8-kilometer layout with a time of 26:24 and made first-team all-conference. Junior
Peter Fekete was next in 19th place (27:11) and junior
Tim Rutan in 39th place (28:23). Also competing were freshmen
Jake Lafaver and Zach Lafaver in 53rd and 56th place respectively. Jake was timed in 29:31, Zach in 29:57.

Rob DeWald finished 58th and freshman
Marcus Mersereau was 71st.
