SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Nazareth closed out its regular-season schedule in women's soccer Saturday by playing to a 0-0 tie in a non-conference game at Skidmore.
The Golden Flyers completed their schedule with a 10-6-2 overall record, while Skidmore is 10-4-3 overall. The result marked the Golden Flyers' second scoreless tie in the last eight days. Nazareth also played Ithaca to a scoreless tie last Saturday. In fact Nazareth has yielded just one goal in its last six games.
The beneficiary of Nazareth's strong defensive play has been senior goalie
Hillary Simon, who recorded five saves Saturday for her eighth shutout of the season and 23rd of her career. She lowered her goals-against average to 0.63 while elevating her save percentage to .896.
Among Simon's five saves Saturday was a key stop in a penalty kick by Skidmore's Lindsay Schmitt in the 78th minute.
"We thought we were in trouble again," said Nazareth Coach
Gail Mann, referring to Tuesday's non-conference loss at Geneseo in which the only goal came on a second-half penalty kick, "but our defense has been playing very well for us and Hillary came up big in that spot."
Nazareth managed six shots -- all on goal.
Meagan Rivera had three shots and
Erica Conte generated two.
The Golden Flyers will be the top seed and host for this weekend's Empire 8 Conference Tournament. Nazareth will play fourth-seeded RIT Saturday at 11 a.m. Second-seeded Ithaca will play third-seeded Stevens in the other semifinal at 1:30 p.m. The championship game is Sunday at 1 p.m.
