Golden Flyers host Elmira Saturday

ROCHESTER, NY - Nazareth defeated Oswego 2-1 Wednesday in a non-conference field hockey game.  The Golden Flyers improved to 5-9 while the Lakers ended their season at 4-11.

Oswego's Kelly Collins scored the first goal of the game at 9:48 to give the Lakers an early 1-0 lead.  Her goal was unassisted.  The Lakers had a slight edge in first half shots 7-5 and held the Golden Flyers scoreless. 

Nina Fargnoli tied the game 1-1, scoring just 3:03 into the second half.  It was her third goal of the season and was also unassisted.

The two teams exchanged shots in the evenly matched game before the Golden Flyers were awarded a penalty stroke in the 59th minute.  Oswego goalkeeper Jamie Scharfe covered the ball after making a save.  Julie Davis took the penalty shot and beat Scharfe to the right corner to give Nazareth a 2-1 lead.  Nazareth was able to hang on during the final 15 minutes to earn its fifth win of the season.

Kelsey Evans finished with eight saves in goal for Nazareth while Scharfe stopped seven.  The Golden Flyers had a 15-13 edge in shots and a 13-8 advantage in penalty corners.

The Golden Flyers host Elmira Saturday, October 30 at 1 p.m. in a key Empire 8 game that will decide their post-season fate. Nazareth needs a win to secure the fourth playoff spot in the Empire 8. Stevens, Washington & Jefferson and Utica have already locked up the top three berths.
