GENESEO, N.Y. -- A penalty kick early in the second half proved to be the difference Tuesday as visiting Nazareth lost a hard-fought women's soccer game to Geneseo, 1-0.
The non-conference loss snapped a five-game unbeaten streak for the Golden Flyers, who dropped to 10-6-1 overall. The victory was the fourth straight for Geneseo, now 12-5-0 overall.
The match was evenly played statistically with each team taking nine shots -- four in the first half and five in the second. Nazareth goalkeeper
Hillary Simon made five saves, while Geneseo's Katie Clerkin had four.
Simon had a scoreless string of 475 minutes snapped in the 56th minute when Geneseo's Kelly Bergin scored the game's only goal on a penalty kick.
Nazareth closes out its regular-season schedule Saturday with a non-conference game at Skidmore at 12 p.m. The Golden Flyers are also the top seed for next weekend's Empire 8 Conference Tournament. Nazareth will play fourth-seeded RIT Saturday Nov. 6 at 11 a.m. Third-seeded Stevens will play second-seeded Ithaca in the other semifinal at 1:30 p.m.
