Nazareth gains E8 playoff berth

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Nazareth won two more women's volleyball matches Saturday to complete the final day of competition at the Empire 8 Conference Crossover at Ithaca College.

The Golden Flyers completed the conference regular-season schedule with a 6-2 record and will be the second seed for next month's E8 Tournament. Ithaca (7-1) gained the top seed and will host the conference's final four Nov. 6.

Nazareth improved to 16-17 overall after a three-set win over Utica (25-11, 25-4, 25-9) and a four-set win over Elmira (27-25, 25-14, 23-25, 25-23).

Nazareth used a .351 hitting percentage to easily dispose of  Utica. Freshman Carolyn Pearson had five kills and sophomore setter Brittany Crocetti had 22 assists and six service aces. Junior Leah Farrell made her first appearance of the season and had seven digs.

Against Elmira, the Golden Flyers needed a victory to finish among the top four teams in the conference and advance to the tournament championship in November. Senior Kristi Custer had 18 kills and nine digs and Crocetti combined 39 assists with seven kills and eight digs.

Junior Ashlee Travis had 11 kills and seven blocks and sophomore Amy Johnson had 10 kills with just one hitting erros in 20 attempts. Sophomore Christina Pelletier and graduate student Carra Vanderstyne each had 12 digs.

Nazareth hosts the Upstate Regional Challenge next weekend before competing in the E8 Tournament.
