ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth's women's soccer team was victorious Saturday in its final regular-season home game as the Golden Flyers used a late first-half goal and two more in the second half for a 3-0 win over Hartwick.
The victory enabled Nazareth to remain unbeaten in Empire 8 Conference action at 6-0. It also marked the Golden Flyers' third straight win as they improved to 9-5 overall. Hartwick dropped to 5-6-2 overall and 2-2-2 in conference play. It was Nazareth's 14th straight win over the Hawks.
Nazareth has two more conference games left -- Wednesday at RIT at 4 p.m. and Saturday at Ithaca at 12 p.m.
On a day that the Golden Flyers honored their seven seniors --
Hillary Simon,
Meghan Finn,
Shaughna Szymanski,
Rachel Piemonte,
Erica Conte,
Meagan Rivera and
Kara Eaker -- scoring chances were difficult to come by early on. Nazareth finally capitalized with just :19 seconds left in the first half as sophomore
Katie Wyant headed a free ball over the head of Hartwick keeper Alyssa Rondo, who watched helplessly as the ball rolled over the goal line. It was Wyant's third goal of the season.
The score went unchanged until the 78th minute when Piemonte was taken down in the penalty area and coverted the resultant penalty kick for her second goal of the season. The third goal came in the 87th minute as freshman
Anne Czelusniak dribbled around a Hartwick defender to create enough space to fire a shot past Rondo.
Nazareth's defense, led by Eaker, did the rest by limiting Hartwick to six harmless shots in helping Simon to record her fifth shutout of the season and 20th of her career.
The victory assures Nazareth of at least the second seed for next month's Empire 8 Conference Tournament. Ithaca, a 1-0 winner over RIT Saturday, also is 6-0 in conference play.
