ROCHESTER, NY - Nazareth field hockey comes up short Thursday at home as the Golden Flyers lost a non-conference game to St. Lawrence, 3-2, despite a late second-half rally. The Golden Flyers fall to 3-7 while St. Lawrence improves to 5-6.
After a scoreless first half, Brooke Maloney put the Saints on the board with an unassisted goal just 1:30 into the second by beating goalie
Kelsey Evans to the upper right corner of the cage. Caitlin Estes extended the lead to two scoring off a penalty corner at 45:33. She was assisted by Maloney. Courtney Cartier rounded out the scoring for the Saints with a goal at 55:37 to put the SLU ahead 3-0. Her goal was scored off a crossing assist from Michelle Laframboise.
It appeared the Saints had put the game away with just 15 minutes left in the second half and a 3-0 lead. However, the Golden Flyers rallied after a timeout and scored two goals in the final 13 minutes.
Alexis Root deflected a shot by Kailee O'Hara on a penalty corner at 57:22 to make the score 3-1. Just eight minutes later the two connected again on the same play to pull Nazareth within one goal, 3-2.
The Golden Flyers had a corner opportunity with less than two minutes left but were unable to get a shot off.
Evans made 13 saves in goal for Nazareth and St. Lawrence's Nicole Matos stopped one shot.
Alex Bracy had a big second half defensive save for the Golden Flyers who were out-shot 19-9, including 14-6 in the second half. The Saints had a slight 10-9 advantage on penalty corners.
Nazareth returns to Empire 8 action on Saturday, October 16 when they travel to Hartwick for a 2 p.m. game.
