ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Four players scored in double figures for host Nazareth Tuesday as the Golden Flyers won their fourth straight men's basketball game, stopping RIT, 76-58, at the Kidera Gymnasium.
Nazareth remained unbeaten in Empire 8 Conference play at 5-0 and improved to 8-3 overall. RIT dropped to 0-3 in conference games and 3-6 overall.
Nazareth led most of the game and used a 14-4 scoring run over the final six minutes of the first half to take a 39-27 lead at the break. Senior
Corey McAdam scored seven of his team-high 21 points in that stretch and sophomore
Phil Scaffidi hit a three-point basket as time expired to extend Nazareth's lead to double digits.
In the second half, RITscored the first seven points to draw within five points, 39-34, following a basket by Brendan Harder (26 points) with 15:37 left. Scaffidi interrupted the drought by converting a three-point play to trigger an 11-2 scoring burst that ended with Nazareth ahead 50-36 with 11:28 to go.
RIT was able to close the gap to single digits three times, but Nazareth answered each time. The last time came with 6:37 left on a jumper by Nate Korinchak that sliced the lead to 60-51. Scaffidi nailed a three-pointer from the left corner on the ensuing possession and Nazareth was never seriously threatened again.
McAdam's 21 points included 7 of 11 shooting and was supplemented with seven rebounds, five assists and five steals. Scaffidi finished with 16 points and six rebounds, while sophomores
Jason Corletta and
Greg Lothridge each scored 10. Lothridge also had six rebounds and three blocks.
Harder grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds to go with his game-high 26 points for the Tigers, who shot just 33.3 percent from the field (23 for 69), including 2 for 11 from three-point range. Nazareth went 28 for 58 from the field and 5 for 9 from long distance.
Nazareth resumes its conference schedule on the road this weekend with games at Ithaca Friday at 8 p.m. and at Utica Saturday at 4.
