Cutcliffe excels at conference meet

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Senior Melissa Cutcliffe turned in a dominating performance in the long jump Sunday at the Empire 8 Indoor Track and Field Championships at RIT's Gordon Field House.

Cutcliffe broke the her own school record as well as the meet record with a first-place leap of 5.44 meters, which equals 17 meet, 10 and 1/4 inches -- five inches farther than her closest competitor. She was named women's Field Athlete of the Meet and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III meet at DePauw, Ind. in March.

Cutcliffe's finish was good for 10 team points and helped Nazareth to a fourth-place finish in the team standings. Ithaca won the meet with 222 points, followed by RIT (97), Stevens (44), Nazareth (25), Alfred (22) and Utica (21).

Junior Kristi Custer also broke her own school record with a second-place finish in the triple jump. She jumped 10.72 meters or 35 feet, 2 inches.

Other top finishers for Nazareth included freshman Mindy Niebuhr with a third-place finish in the high jump with a leap of 1.53 meters (or 5 feet, 1/4 inches) and senior Caitlyn Parmelee with a seventh-place finish in the mile with a time of 2:35.96.

Nazareth's distance medley relay team of Michelle Gillette, Evelyn DeSantis, Michelle Rombach and Lauren Jamieson finished third with a time of 13:35.63.

In the men's meet, graduate student Robby Castor paced the Golden Flyers by winning the mile run with a time of 4:28.12. Nazareth finished sixth in the team standings with 23 points. Ithaca was first with 181, followed by RIT (138), Alfred (51), Stevens (38), Utica (32) and Nazareth.

Castor also finished third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.89. Sophomore Dan Polino finished sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 12.89 meters (42 feet, 3 1/2 inches) and junior Matt Morales was ninth in the 5,000-meter run (16:22.25).

Nazareth's distance medley relay team also finished third in 11:14.93 with the group of Tim Rutan, Philip Schierer, Dave Patalano and Morales.
