ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Fourth-seeded Geneseo used 15-5 scoring run midway through the second half Thursday to secure the lead for good and the Knights held on to defeat top-seeded Nazareth, 62-61, in a women's basketball consolation game at the Wendy's College Classic at the University of Rochester's Palestra.
The disappointing defeat was the sixth in a row for the Golden Flyers, who dropped to 7-8 overall. Geneseo improved to 6-5 overall. Nazareth will complete its participation in the tournament with a Saturday morning home game against at 11 a.m.
Nazareth trailed 23-21 at halftime and never led in the second half. The score, however, was tied at 43-43 following a basket by
Jenee Vanderstyne with 11:04 to play. Geneseo then went on its decisive scoring run to take a 10-point advantage, 58-48. Geneseo's Khadija Campbell completed the run with a three-point play with 4:18 to go.
Nazareth battled back, using two baskets by
Brittany Wilson, one by
Kelly Dunne and a three-pointer by
Erica Shaw to close within two, 59-57, with :31 left. Geneseo's Bri Dunton made two free throws and Katelyn Charbonneau added another in the closing seconds to preserve the Geneseo lead. Dunne then nailed a 40-foot three-pointer as time expired to make the final margin one point.
Dunne led all scorers with 17 points to go with four assists. Wilson added 16 and
Brittany Tallchief grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Charbonneau had 13 for Geneseo and Alyssa Polosky added 12. Campbell had nine points and nine rebounds.
Nazareth swhot just 35.3 percent from the field (24 for 68), including 30.4 percfent (7 for 23) from three-point range. Geneseo shot 41.2 percent (21 for 51) and had a 44-34 rebounding advantage.
