Lauren McKinney of Nazareth's swimming and diving team has been named Athlete of the Week by the Empire 8 Conference for the seven-day period ending Jan. 11.
McKinney assisted the Golden Flyers in their 170-129 victory over Rochester on Saturday by winning three individual events and swimming in a winning relay. She won the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.75), the 200-yard butterfly (2:15.75), and the 400-yard medley (4:50.14). She also swam on the first place 200-yard medley team, which finished with a time of 1:54.77.
A native of Watertown, this is McKinney's fourth season on the women's swimming and diving team. In her 2008-09 season, McKinney earned second team Empire 8 all-star honors for the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly. During the 2007-08 season, McKinney earned first team all-conference in the 200 fly and 800 free relay. She also received second team honors for the 200 IM, 200 medley relay, and 200 free relay. In addition, McKinney earned Empire 8 honors in the 2006-07 season. Her performance in the 200-yard butterfly and the 800-yard freestyle relay led her to earn first team all-conference honors, while her 200 and 400 medley relays earned her second team all-conference.
The Golden Flyers' next competition will take place on Jan. 23 at Fredonia.
