GENEVA, N.Y. -- Host William Smith needed a late goal from senior Janelle Walkley Saturday to rally past Nazareth for a 2-1 non-conference field hockey victory at McCooey Field. The game was the season opener for the Golden Flyers, while William Smith improved to 2-0 overall.
Golden Flyers' junior goalie
Kelsey Evans made her 20th and final save of the match on a shot senior Kaitlyn Hamilton, but
the long rebound came to Walkley near the edge of the scoring area between the end line and the top of the arc. With less than six minutes remaining in the match, she unleashed a blast that beat Evans for the go-ahead goal.
Nazareth opened the scoring in the 16th minute when freshman Kailee O'Hara dribbled from the top of the circle toward the left post, unleashing a reverse shot 3 yards out that slipped inside the right post. It was her first career goal.
William Smith pulled even 37 seconds before the halftime horn on a goal from junior Emily Atwan.
The Herons kept the Golden Flyers under pressure, outshooting their guests 29-5 and holding a 21-3 advantage in penalty corners. The Nazareth defense, bolstered by Evans' stellar play, handled nearly everything William Smith threw at it, but simply couldn't muster enough counterattacks.
Junior goalie Chelsea Snyder made a pair of saves to earn her second win of the season for the Herons.
Nazareth plays at home Sunday against Ohio Wesleyan at 12 p.m.
