ROCHESTER, NY - Nazareth's
Sara Heron (Amherst, NY) scored the winning goal at 44:51 to break a 1-1 tie and give the Golden Flyers a 2-1 win over visiting Houghton College in a non-conference field hockey match-up. With the win Nazareth improves to 4-3 overall (0-1 in the E8). Houghton drops to 3-4 overall.
Nazareth freshman Kailee O'Hara (Camden, NY) opened up the scoring 15:25 into the game. O'Hara received a pass from senior
Kelly Flanagan (Fairport, NY) and beat the Houghton goalkeeper with a shot to the left corner of the cage.
The Highlanders tied the score 1-1 just 10 minutes later when Ashley Hoffman (Webster, NY) scored on a rebound off the pads of Nazareth goalkeeper
Kelsey Evans (Penfield, NY).
Despite being out-shot 11-7, Nazareth was able to get the go-ahead goal from Heron at 44:51. Heron collected her own rebound off of Houghton goalkeeper Emily VanEenwyk's pads to give the Flyers the 2-1 lead.
Nazareth's defense finished strong to preserve the win. Sophomore
Lindsey Wagner (Deposit, NY) came up with a big defensive stop on a Highlander penalty corner with under a minute to play. Wagner was able to control the ball to the midfield until time ran out.
Evans finished with seven saves in the win and VanEenwyk had four stops for Houghton.
The Golden Flyers are on the road this Saturday at Elmira College for a 1 p.m. E8 match-up.
