ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Stevens defeated Nazareth 2-0 in the E8 Conference field hockey opener Saturday. The Ducks scored both goals in the first half, then kept Nazareth of the scoreboard the rest of the way. Nazareth now stands at 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the Empire 8 conference. Stevens, ranked 20th nationally in Division III, improves to 5-1, 1-0 in the E8.
The first goal was scored by Stevens' Kara Borzillo and assisted by Marguerite Chavez at 23:37. The goal was scored off a penalty corner. With only two minutes left in the first half, Lauren Griggs scored for Stevens off a rebound from
Kelsey Evans (Penfield, NY) goal pads.
Nazareth freshman
Lindsey Smith (Cazenovia) stood out among the Golden Flyers with five shots. The Ducks out-shot Nazareth 14-8 and had an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Evans finished the game with 10 saves and Ellyn Griggs finished with four saves for Stevens.
The Golden Flyers are home again on Tuesday, September 22. They host Houghton College for a 6 p.m. non-conference game.
