Van Slyke wins at Elmira

Sophomore shoots 80 to lead Golden Flyers

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Sophomore Michelle Van Slyke turned in medalist honors Monday with a 6-over-par score of 80 to lead the Golden Flyers' women's golf team to a third-place finish at the Elmira Invitational.

Van Slyke shot identical rounds of 40 on the front and back nines to finish two strokes ahead of Theresa Apoznanski of New York University. Nazareth had a team score of 377 to finish in third place as a team. Cortland won the event with 351 and University of Waterloo was second with 372.

Junior Meaghan Hardy also competed for Nazareth and finished in a tie for seventh place individually with a score of 87. Bridget Burkart (52-52 -- 104) and Elizabeth Mitro (56-50 -- 106) also competed for Nazareth.

In the men's tournament, Nazareth finished in a three-way tie for third place with a team score of 349. Elmira (313) and Hobart (339) was second. Oswego, Potsdam and Nazareth were tied for third.

Senior Matt Dalton continued to play well for the Golden Flyers as he finished in a tie for fifth place individually with a score of 80. Senior Josh Maxwell was next in 13th place with a score of 84. Ben Herrmann (89), Frank McGuigan (96) snd R.C. Weston (97) also competed.
