Nazareth splits with Geneseo

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Junior Lisa Nazarenko allowed just two hits over five innings and struck out six in the second game of a softball doubleheader Friday as Nazareth salvaged a split with a 10-1 victory over Geneseo. The Blue Knights rallied with five runs in the seventh innings for a 7-5 victory in the first game.

Nazareth's record is 14-16 overall, while Geneseo's overall record moved to 18-16. The Golden Flyers close out their Empire 8 Conference schedule Saturday with a doubleheader against Elmira, starting at 1 p.m.

In Friday's second game, Nazareth scored four runs in the first inning and six more in the third to shorten the game to five innings.

Junior Kelley Horbal had five hits in the doubleheader, including a single to lead off the bottom of the first inning in the second game. She later scored on a single by Lizzie Barlow. Nazarenko also had a run-scoring single later in the inning.

In the third inning, Horbal and sophomore Katie Valerio each had run-scoring singles and Barlow drove home two more runs with a double.

Nazarenko did the rest on the pitcher's mound as she finished with six strikeouts to pick up her sixth win of the season.

In the first game, Horbal and Nazarenko each had three hits and senior Laura Persico drove in a run with an infield grounder. Nazareth led 3-2 heading to the top of the seventh when Geneseo exploded for five runs on six hits off Nazareth starting pitcher Christa Harris. Bree Crosett highlighted the inning with a run-scoring double for one of her three hits in the game.

Nazareth came back to score twice in the bottom of the inning, but Geneseo got the side out with the tying run on first base.
