ALFRED, N.Y. -- Sophomore attackman
Joe Jacobs-Ferderbar scored a career-best five goals for visiting Nazareth Wednesday as the Golden Flyers got back on track in men's lacrosse with a 13-6 victory over Empire 8 Conference rival Alfred.
The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Golden Flyers, who improved to 7-6 overall and 4-3 in conference games. Alfred is 8-6 overall and 1-6 in the Empire 8.
Nazareth trailed for a good portion of the first half, before sophomore midfielder
Scott Castle scored off an assist from
Mike Cummings with :03 left in the half to give the Golden Flyers a 5-4 advantage.
After Alfred tied the score at 5-5 on a goal by Andrew Belica with 7:58 left in the third quarter, Nazareth scored twice in a 36-second span to secure the lead for good at 7-5. Jacobs-Ferderbar scored off a pass from freshman #C.J. Estes# with 5:38 left in the third quarter, then Estes added an unassisted score with 5:02 left. Jacobs-Ferderbar scored again with 2:15 left in the quarter to make it 8-5.
Nazareth then pulled away in the fourth quarter by using an 11-4 shooting advantage to score five times.
The Saxons converted a man-up opportunity early in the period, then Nazareth scored the next five goals. Senior midfielder
Sean Dennison scored unassisted with 10:41 left. Junior attackman
Mark DeCirce then scored the next two goals, the second coming on an extra-man pass from sophomore #R.J. Gringeri#.
Nazareth's last two goals came in a 26-second stretch -- Erinn O'Hara netted the first goals with 3:34 to go and Jacobs-Ferderbar followed with his fifth goal of the game and 28th of the season for the 13-6 final.
Alfred got two goals each from Mike Russo and Marc Zoyhofski and one goal and four assists from Belica as the Saxons had leads of 3-1 and 4-2 deep into the second quarter. Nazareth was able to seize control behind the face-off work of Gringeri, who won 17 of 23 draws and scooped up a game-high 10 ground balls. DeCirce and Estes each finished with two goals and one assist.

Todd Dermody played all 60 minutes and was credited with six saves.
