ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth swept a softball doubleheader from Oswego Thursday as the Golden Flyers improved to 8-6 overall with 3-2 and 7-1 victories.
In the first game, Nazareth rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. In the second game, Nazareth banged out 11 hits to support the three-hit pitching of senior
Christa Harris.
Trailing 2-0 in game one, Nazareth scored all three runs after two were out in he sixth inning. Consecutive singles by
Laura Finan,
Lizzie Barlow,
Laura Persico and
Lisa Nazarenko plated all three runs. Oswego threatened in the seventh inning with a single and a walk, but Nazarenko pitched out of the jam, getting the last hitter to strike out swinging.
Nazarenko improved to 4-0 on the pitcher's mound with a 0.79 earned run average. She yielded eight hits and struck out seven.
In the second game, Nazareth scored twice each in the first and third innings.
Kelley Horbal had a one-out single and advanced to third on Barlow's double. Both runners later scored on a double by Nazarenko.
In the third inning,
Katie Valerio was hit by a pitch to open the inning and advanced to third on Barlow's second double of the game. Both runners scored on a double by Persico.
Oswego scored a run in the fourth and Nazareth answered with three runs in the bottom half of th inning on four hits. Singles by Harris,
Jennifer Linnan and
Polly Muehlenkamp loaded the bases. Harris scored on a single by Valerio and Linnan advanced home on an error. Muehlenkamp later scored on an infield grounder by Horbal.
Harris did the rest for Nazareth as she won her second game of the season. She allowed only three hits and one unearned run while striking out two.
Nazareth is home for doubleheaders both Saturday and Sunday. The Golden Flyers play E8 Conference rival Elmira Saturday at 1 p.m. and non-conference foe Rensselaer Sunday at 12 p.m.
