Nazareth falls at Stevens, 16-7

Golden Flyers drop to 8-6 overall

HOBOKEN, N.J. -- Host Stevens Institute of Technology scored the first eight goals of the game Sunday and the 11th-ranked Ducks went on to remain unbeaten in women's lacrosse with a 16-7 victory over Nazareth.

Stevens improved to 13-0 overall and 6-0 in conference games. The Golden Flyers are 8-6 overall and 4-3 in Empire 8 action.

Alyssa Pigott scored six goals and added one assist for the winners, who had a 35-25 shooting advantage and won 14 of 25 draw controls. Karen Federico scored four goals and Christine Smith scored twice. Nazareth was led by Michelle Cook, who scored four goals.

Stevens scored three times in a 1:14 span early in the first half to take control. Federico scored first on a free-position shot at 23:48. Pigott scored unassisted 43 seconds later and added a free-position goal just 31 seconds after that.

Federico went on to score twice more in the first half, including an unassisted score with 14:06 to play to make the score 8-0.

Nazareth finally broke through on the first of two goals by Nora Davis, who scored off a pass from Melissa Brennan. Stevens also got first-half scores from Leah Wasserman and Christine Smith and led 10-3 at the half. Cook and Kara Kulba also scored for Nazareth.

Pigott scored three more goals in the second half as the Ducks remained in control. Cook scored three more times for Nazareth over the final 30 minutes.

Maria Fusco played all 60 minutes in goal for Nazareth and had 12 saves. Hannah Brennan led the team with five ground balls. Grace Sack had 13 saves for Stevens.

Nazareth returns to action Tuesday for a non-conference game at Union at 4 p.m.
