Nazareth hosts Empire 8 Championship meet

Men place 5th; Women finish 3rd

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth senior Robby Castor placed first in the 800-meter run (1:55.59) and third in the 1500-meter run (4:01.32) to help the Golden Flyers' men's track and field team earn 43 team points at the Empire 8 Track and Field Championships, hosted by Nazareth. Junior Matt Case added a second place finish in the 400-meter dash (49.69 seconds) and a third place finish in the 200-meter event (22.95 seconds). The Golden Flyers finished the meet in fifth place.

Ithaca won the men's team title with a total of 222 team points. RIT finished second with 186 points, followed by Stevens Institute of Technology with 76 points, Alfred University with 58 points, and Nazareth with 43 points. Ithaca's Jeff Wetmore was voted as the Men's Track Athlete of the Meet, and his teammate, Corey Petermann, was voted the Men's Field Athlete of the Meet.

In the 400, Case was edged by teammate Ryan Ingram, who placed first with a time of 49.58 seconds. Freshman Peter Fekete added a sixth place finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:25.97.

Other top performers for the Golden Flyers included sophomore Matt Morales, who finished eighth in the 5000-meter run in 15:57.88. Freshman Dan Polino also added a ninth place finish in the triple jump and an 11th place finish in the long jump. Polino's mark for the triple jump was 40 feet, 1 1/2 inches, and in the long jump, Polino reached 18 feet, 9 1/4 inches.

In the women's meet, Nazareth senior Lauren Glaser placed first in the 800-meter run (2:20.69) and second in the 400-meter dash (1:00.90) to help lead Nazareth's track and field team to a third place finish at the Empire 8 Track and Field Championships, hosted by Nazareth. Sophomore Kristi Custer also turned in a first place performance in the triple jump (35 feet, 5 inches) and a seventh place finish in the 100-meter dash (13.98 seconds).

Ithaca won the women's meet as the Bombers tallied 322 team points. RIT finished second with 129 points, followed by the Golden Flyers in third place with 75 points. Stevens Institute of Technology finished in fourth place with 34 points, and Alfred University was in fifth place with 22 points. Ithaca's Marcia McCord was voted as the Women's Track Athlete of the Meet, and her teammate, Jessica Hoeffner, was voted as the Women's Field Athlete of the Meet.

Other top performers for Nazareth included seniors Melissa Cutcliffe and Katie Adams. Cutcliffe placed second in the 100-meter dash (13.24 seconds), fourth in the long jump (16 feet, 10 3/4 inches) and fifth in the 200-meter dash (28.54 seconds). Adams recorded fifth place finishes in the discus (90 feet, 3 inches) and hammer throw (116 feet, 8 inches), and ninth place finishes in the shot put (28 feet, 8 1/2 inches) and javelin throw (68 feet, 10 inches).

Graduate student Jessica Brown finished third in the 1500-meter run (5:04.21) while freshman Deborah Morey placed sixth in the 100-meter hurdles (17.24 seconds) and sixth in the long jump (16 feet, 3 inches). The Golden Flyers had three finishers in the top six places in the 3000-meter steeplechace as junior Shannon Bradley placed third (12:35.85), freshman Michelle Gillette placed fifth (12:32.72), and sophomore Sarah Wilcox finished sixth (13:40.01). Junior Jill Egmond also scored points for Nazareth with her fifth place finish in the pole vault (8 feet, 2 1/2 inches).

The Golden Flyers' next competition will be at the Geneseo Invitational April 25th.
