BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Nazareth freshman
Kelly Kocher struck out a school-record 18 batters in the first game of a non-conference softball doubleheader Wednesday to lead Nazareth to a 4-0 victory over host Medaille. The Mavericks came back to take the second game 6-4 to keep the Golden Flyers' record at an even 10-10.
Kocher allowed just two hits in the first game to pick up her third win of the season against four losses. She raised her season strikeout total to 74 in just 52 innings pitched. Junior
Laura Finan backed Kocher's pitching by hitting a two-run homer as part of Nazareth's three-run seventh inning. Senior
Lizzie Barlow went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run batted in.
In the second game, senior
Christa Harris pitched and took the loss. She also went 1-for-3 at the plate with two runs batted in. Junior
Polly Muehlenkamp added a double and freshman
Brittany Patenaude went 1-for-3 with a run batted in. Nazareth led 4-2 after scoring four times in the top of the sixth inning. Medaille rallied to score four runs of its own in the bottom of the sixth ad then held Nazareth scoreless in the top of the seventh.
Nazareth is back in Buffalo Thursday for a non-conference doubleheader at D'Youville.
