Nazareth wins twice

Golden Flyers defeat Ramapo and Quincy

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth defeated sixth-ranked Ramapo in five sets (30-20, 27-30, 23-30, 30-28, 15-12), then rallied to defeat Quincy in four sets (25-30, 30-24, 33-31, 30-19). Senior Frank Leahy tallied 68 assists against Ramapo and 49 assists against Quincy. Leahy also added a match-high four aces and a team-high 10 digs in the Golden Flyers' match against Quincy.

With the two victories, the Golden Flyers, ranked seventh nationally, improve to 19-4 overall. Ramapo dropped to 21-4 following the loss to Nazareth and Quincy fell to 10-17 after its loss to the Golden Flyers.

Freshman Billy Gimello led Nazareth with 18 kills against Quincy. Sophomore Hans Schroeder and senior Joe Petzoldt added 12 kills and 10 kills respectively for the Golden Flyers. Senior Chris DeHority finished with eight digs while junior Brian Bunch added seven digs.

As a team, Nazareth held a 14.5-5 advantage in blocks. Leahy tallied a solo block and five assisted blocks while Kelvin Rolle recorded six assisted blocks and Ryan Johnsen added five assisted blocks.

Quincy was led by Max Pompa who had a team-high 17 kills, followed by Peter Coley and Greg Gant, who each recorded 11 kills. Ivan Shirokov tallied a team-high 39 assists as the team's primary setter while Pompa and Collin Cooper each finished with 11 digs.

The Golden Flyers overcame a 2-1 deficit in sets Sunday to defeat Ramapo in a competitive men's volleyball match. The Golden Flyers won the match in five sets by scores of 30-20, 27-30, 23-30, 30-28, 15-12.

With the score tied at 12 in the fifth set, Nazareth got the final three points on kills by  Johnsen and  Petzoldt and a combined block from Johnsen and Leahy.

Petzoldt had three of his 15 kills in the final set while Johnsen had two of his 10 kills and two of his eight blocks. Rolle also had 15 kills for the Golden Flyers and Gimello added 14 kills.

Bunch contributed 11 kills and Schroeder had 10. Leahy amassed 68 assists, just one shy of his own school record. He also had 15 digs and four blocks. DeHority added 18 digs.

Ramapo's Shane Donohue had 19 kills and Tom Kohler and TC Elsasser each had 14.

The Golden Flyers travel to Kenosha, Wisconsin to play in the Carthage Tournament March 13-14. Nazareth will return home March 27-28 to host the NECVA West Tournament.
