ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth juniors
Nora Davis and
Jennifer Young scored four goals and three goals respectively to lead the host Golden Flyers to a thrilling 11-10 non-conference victory over Rensselaer. Young tallied her three goals in the first 16:11 of the game to give Nazareth a 4-2 advantage midway through the first half.
With the victory, Nazareth improves to 3-2 overall. After beginning the season 3-0, the Red Hawks fall to 3-2 overall with their second consecutive loss.
After Young scored on a free position opportunity just 2:25 into the game, RPI answered with back-to-back goals spanning 34 seconds to claim a 2-1 lead. Davis tied the game for Nazareth at the 23:04 mark of the first half with her first goal of the game. Young tallied her second and third goal of the game to give the Golden Flyers the 4-2 lead.
Davis added her second goal of the game with just under 12 minutes remaining in the first period to stretch Nazareth's lead to three goals, 5-2. After Kerri Clark scored for the Red Hawks in the closing minutes of the half, sophomore
Michelle Cook reclaimed the Golden Flyers' three-goal lead by converting a free position shot with 29 seconds left in the half.
Nazareth's offense continued to put pressure on RPI early in the second half as senior
Shannon Lattimore and sophomore
Alyssa Mulheron each found the back of the net in the first five minutes of the second period to extend the Golden Flyers' lead to a game-high five goals.
About a minute after Mulheron's goal, the Red Hawks rallied with the first of four consecutive goals spanning 8:22 to cut Nazareth's advantage to 8-7. Whitney Kukol and Stephanie Caouette each tallied two goals to cut RPI's deficit to one goal with 15:29 left in the game.
Davis and Lattimore traded goals with the Red Hawks' Clark, Emma Albert, and Emily Donowick to keep the Golden Flyers at least one goal ahead through the final 14:11 of the game. RPI kept the pressure on Nazareth in the final minutes but goalie
Ann Sessler kept the Red Hawks off the board with help from Nazareth's defense, including senior
Hannah Brennan, who knocked down several passes.
Sessler finished with four saves in the final 21:27 of the game while senior
Maria Fusco also recorded four saves in 38:33. Ariana Hood made seven saves for RPI.
Nazareth held a 12-6 advantage in ground balls, but Rensselaer held a 13-10 edge in draw controls. Each team tallied 27 shots.
The Golden Flyers host Wooster March 28th before opening their Empire 8 schedule at St. John Fisher Wednesday, April 1st.
