Nazareth tops St. Lawrence, 10-6

Golden Flyers improve to 2-1

CANTON, N.Y. -- Sophomore Michelle Cook scored two goals and assisted on two others and senior goaltender Maria Fusco made had a number of spectacular saves among her 11 in the game as Nazareth College topped St. Lawrence University 10-6 in a non-conference women's lacrosse game on North Country Field Friday afternoon. The  Golden Flyers improved to 2-1, while St. Lawrence was playing its season opener.

The two teams were tied 2-2 after a first half dominated by the defenses and with the help of Fusco's seven saves for the Golden Flyers, but Nazareth outscored the Saints 8-4 in the second half for the victory.

St. Lawrence twice had the lead in the first half as Kelsey Redpath opened the scoring at 21:46 and after Norda Davis tied it at 1-1 with 14:36 to play in the half, Julie Wooters put the Saints back on top with 11:13 to play. Jennifer Young tied it for Nazareth at 7:56 to make it a 2-2 game at the intermission.

The two teams traded goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but Nazareth went on a 3-0 run to take command. Shannon Lattimore scored two straight and Cook scored her first of the game with 10:05 to play to make it a 7-4 Nazareth lead.

Kim Morse got one back for the Saints with 9:47 to play, but Cook scored with 6:53 left and then set up Kate Schneeberger with 4:52 to all but clinch the win for Nazareth.

Anna Marchand finished with six saves for the Saints, who also had some help from a number of Nazareth shots which went off posts. Nazareth had a 27-21 overall edge in shots on goal for the game.

Amanda Forbes, Mary Janes Sweetland and Kat Knickerbocker also scored goals for the Saints while Morse had two assists and Forbes one. Jennifer Young added a pair of goals and an assist for the Golden Flyers.

Nazareth plays again Tuesday at Christopher Newport in Virginia at 3 p.m.
