Nazareth to induct 7 former standouts

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth College will be honoring seven former student-athletes at its 15th annual Sports Hall of Fame induction dinner Friday, April 17 at the Burgundy Basin Inn.

Former men’s lacrosse All-Americans Jake Coon, ’02 and Ryan McDermott, ‘98; former women’s volleyball All-American Christa Downey, ’03; former field hockey standout Cheryl Hoda, ’00; former men’s basketball standout Steve Perkins, ’83; former women’s lacrosse All-American Allison Roberts, ’02; and former women’s swimming All-American Cheryl Roubian, ’03 will be honored in a special ceremony.

Coon, of Homer, N.Y., was a four-time All-American as a four-year starting goalie for the men’s lacrosse team. He was named Goalie of the Year in both 1998 and 2000, and helped Nazareth win a national championship in 1997. He holds several records, including most career saves (769) and most saves in a game (32).

McDermott, of Garden City, N.Y., was a four-year standout on the men’s lacrosse team and helped the Golden Flyers to a 55-7 cumulative record. He guided his team to four straight trips to the national championship game (1995-98) and scored the winning goal in overtime to win the 1997 national championship. He amassed 128 points on 82 goals and 46 assists as a midfielder and was a three-time All American.

Downey, of Livonia, N.Y., was a three-year women’s volleyball standout and led the Golden Flyers to a 108-15 record and three NCAA Tournament berths. As a three-time first team All-American as an outside hitter, she ranks among the all-time leaders in NCAA Division III history with 2,984 kills and set an NCAA record with 1,065 kills in 2002.

Hoda, of Taberg, N.Y., was a four-year women’s field hockey standout and is Nazareth’s all-time leading scorer with 113 points on 51 goals and 11 assists. She was named to NYSWCAA all-star team and to North Atlantic Region All-American team in 1999.

Perkins, of Rochester, N.Y., was a four-year member of the men’s basketball team and helped the Golden Flyers to a cumulative record of 60-41. He was named to Private College Athletic Conference all-star team in 1980-81 and ranks among Nazareth career leaders in points (1,031), rebounds (556), field goals made (404), field goal percentage (.539) and free throws made (223).

Roberts, of Rochester, N.Y., was a four-year women’s lacrosse standout who ranks as the program’s all-time leading scorer with 330 points on 184 goals and 146 assists. She earned third-team All American honors in 2002, was named Empire 8 Player of the Year, and helped Nazareth to NCAA Tournament berths in 2000 and 2002.

Roubian, of Rome, N.Y., was a four-year swimming standout for the Golden Flyers and finished her career as a five-time All-American and as the program’s all-time leading point producer (2,159). She placed in the top 8 nationally in the 100 backstroke three times and still holds the school record in this event (:58.14).
