Nazareth tops Elmira, 64-59

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Senior Sally Wilcox scored a game-high 16 points and Lizzie Barlow added 14 as visiting Nazareth recorded a 64-59 women's basketball victory Tuesday over Elmira in an Empire 8 Conference game.

Nazareth improved to 11-8 overall and 5-5 in conference play. Elmira is 8-10 overall and 3-6 in the E8. The Golden Flyers' victory put them in a fourth-place tie with St. John Fisher in the conference standings as the Cardinals are also 5-5 in Empire 8 games.

The Golden Flyers held an eight-point lead several times during the first half, including a 23-15 lead with 3:58 remaining in the first period after a two-point jumper by Barlow. The Soaring Eagles, however, finished the half with a 13-5 scoring run to tie the game 28-28 at halftime. Elmira's Marcia Coakley hit a layup with :02 seconds remaining to cap the Soaring Eagles' rally.

Elmira took a four-point lead in the first three minutes of the second half before the Golden Flyers rallied. A jumper by freshman Katie Kollar put Nazareth ahead 40-39 with 13:19 to play. The Golden Flyers then added back-to-back baskets to take a 45-39 lead just one minute later, and never surrendered their lead.

Nazareth led by as many as nine points in the second half following two free throws by Kelly Dunne with 6:52 left. The Soaring Eagles outscored the Golden Flyers 6-0 in the next 1:04 to cut Nazareth's lead to three points, 57-54, but Barlow connected on two free throws and Wilcox added her fourth three-pointer of the game to give the Golden Flyers a 62-54 lead.

Elmira also closed to within three points, 62-59, in the closing minutes by connecting on two free throws and a three-point basket, but Rachel Pirozzolo sank two free throws with 2.9 seconds left to seal the win.

Wilcox's points included four three-pointers. Barlow was 6 for 7 from the field with 12 of her points coming in the first half. She also had eight rebounds. Mary Symonds and Marcia Coakley each scored 14 points for Elmira.

Nazareth is home Saturday for a key Empire 8 Conference game against St. John Fisher at 2 p.m.
