SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Nazareth junior Erin Rappold saved her best race for last Saturday as she blew away the competition to win the 1,650-yard freestyle on the final day of the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association championship at Nottingham High School.

Rappold's performance enabled the Golden Flyers to maintain their fourth-place standing in the team competition. Nazareth was a solid fourth with 880.50 points. Ithaca won the meet with 1,338 points. Stevens was second at 1,161.50; Union third (1,018) and Nazareth fourth.

Rappold's time of 17:31.08 was a school and meet record and was more than eight seconds faster than her closest pursuer. She bettered the school record held by Amy Mehltretter since 2005 by more than 16 seconds. Rappold also reached the NCAA B-cut qualifying standard.

Senior Martha Mortensen also swam well by finishing eighth in the same race in 18:22.23. Other top finishers included junior Lauren McKinney, who placed fourth in the 200 butterfly with a B-cut time of 2:08.69; and junior Lindsey Buzard, who finished second in 3-meter diving (382.35).

Nazareth also finished fourth in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:37.42 that narrowly missed the school record. That team featured freshman Rachael Phipps, senior Brittany Beane, McKinney and freshman Jaclyn Conklin.
