ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth's men's 200-yard medley relay team came within a fraction of a second of breaking a school record Friday as they posted a first-place finish on the first day of competition at the annual Don Richards Swimming and Diving Invitational at RIT.

Rob Wortel finished first in 1:38.91, less than a second short of the record of 1:38.50 that was set last season.
The Golden Flyers are in fifth place in the team standings with 65 points. Ithaca is first with 131, followed closely by Hartwick with 126. Alfred (110), RIT (108), Nazareth and LeMoyne (54) also are competing.
In other events, freshman
Josh Haak (18:07.80) finished ninth and junior
Paul Thompson 11th (18:20.46) in the 1,650-yard freestyle.
In the women's meet, Nazareth got a second-place finish from senior
Erin Rappold in the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:31.72) and was in second place in the team standings after the first day. Senior
Courtney Pilc finished fourth in the same event (18:36.57).
Ithaca was in first place with 175 points, followed by Nazareth with 117.
Senior
Lindsey Buzard placed second in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 346.40 and Nazareth's 200-yard medley relay team placed third in 1:52.01.

Holly Gilligan swam in that race for Nazareth.
